I’m excited by emerging technologies and how they can be leveraged to create user-centered, accessible products that ultimately improve people’s lives. My background in mechanical engineering and audio/visual design provides a unique perspective on problem-solving and storytelling.
Hi, I’m Brian, Lead UX Designer at Cascade PBS. I’ve designed impactful and inclusive digital products being used by hundreds of thousands of users across the U.S. and Canada to discover high quality programming and journalism, and connect with their communities.

Personal Passions
When I worked as a visual and audio designer for musicians, I learned how to communicate with stakeholders on a path towards mutual success.
For the last four years I’ve worked as a UX designer and learned the importance uncovering true user needs.
I’ve found the career that suits my proclivity towards synergizing science and art, and let’s me enjoy my passion for technology.
After degreeing in mechanical engineering, I started my career as a design engineer
2012

2013
Design Engineer, Boeing
2017

Career Journey
I believe excellent design emerges from attention to detail.
After using rough concepts to convey ideas and discover an optimal solution, it’s time to refine the product by establishing consistency, hierarchy, and simplicity.
Each decision should be made with intention. Interface bloat should be ruthlessly removed. Trends should be followed only if there is reasoning.
Keeping the stakes low at the beginning of a project allows me to experiment and fail before honing in on an optimal solution.
I often share multiple concepts with stakeholders to establish a range of possibilities and open their minds.
Although predictable, established flows are usually best, sometimes innovative design, when intentionally used, brings unexpected value to the user and organization.
Rather than just completing a design and handing it off, I work with engineers and all stakeholders from the beginning.
I believe we must be comfortable with the early, messy phases of product design where user needs are yet to be grasped and ideas are half-baked.
I may disagree with stakeholders, but I want to fully understand their thoughts. If I remain unconvinced, I make sure to explain my reasoning. Each decision comes down to balancing tradeoffs.
